UII Students Record Achievements at the 2023 GEMASTIK

Malang—Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII) students have again recorded national achievements. This time, three teams from UII received awards at the National Information and Communication Technology Students’ Competition (GEMASTIK) held at Universitas Brawijaya in Malang in September 2023.

The competition—initiated by the Indonesian Talent Development Center at the National Achievement Center of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology—is a medium to develop students’ interests and talents, especially in the field of information and communications technology (ICT).

UII delegates took home prizes in three categories, namely First Runner-up for ICT Business Development, Second Runner-up for Smart Device, Embedded System and IoT, and Third Runner-up for UX Design.

On QuaIT team’s success of winning the second place, Syuhda Fakhrunnisa said the system the team built was based on the urgency of a system that could help improve the quality of educators using a microteaching assessment system. “We built a QUAL system, a microteaching assessment platform, that integrates speaking quality assessment, facial expression control, and use of body language to assess a teacher’s teaching quality in terms of material delivery,” explained Syuhda Fakhrunnisa.

The QuaIT team mentor for the 2023 GEMASTIK, Kholid Haryono, S.T., M.Kom., said the key to the team’s success was its unique topic. “The topic raised was unique and would have a big impact on Indonesia. It is a platform for improving the quality of education by improving teachers’ abilities,” he said.

Student Rizan Qardafil hoped that UII would collect other national and international prestigious awards in the future. “I hope that these achievements will be a trigger to encourage us to work more and become better in the future,” he said. “Chances are wide open for UII to win more gold medals, even the overall champion award.”

Kevin Rizki Ananda Putra, member of the team that won the Second Runner-up, said the challenge teams often experienced was the relatively short time for preparation. “The theme we brought was an Artificial Intelligence-Based Shrimp Seed Counter Tool. We had to really focus for a whole two months because from the preliminary round to the final, quite a lot of components had to be collected,” said Kevin.

Meanwhile, member of the team that won Third Runner-up for UX Design, Zahwa Almira Kayla, said team members’ different schedules was the key obstacle during the competition process. “The main challenge was to organize a schedule that suit all team members,” she said.

For future competitions, she hoped that UII could send more delegates and compete for more medals. “For future competitions, we hope for more GEMASTIK delegates from UII so that we can present more of our important innovations,” she said. (VIP Magazine Vol 10)
